By the way … a complete (and printable) step-by-step breakdown of this video lesson is available to course members. Learning how to play jazz piano can be challenging enough if you have a passion for the music, but if you find you are growing disinterested, it may not be long before you give up on it. If you want to stay committed to your lessons and continue to study music, you will need ways to keep things interesting and fresh. Anyone who grows bored with what they are doing will no longer want to do it. You will find other ways to fill your free time that bring you more excitement. However, you may look back on the time and money you did invest in learning to play piano and you may regret giving it up.

In order to keep your interest in your music lessons, try adding some variety. Often, repetition is the best way to learn to play an instrument. Over time though, it can become tedious to study the same piece of music over and over. If you are struggling with a certain song, there is no reason why you should not put it aside and focus on something else for awhile. When you return to the original piece, you may find that things click into place. It is better to put something aside that is frustrating you than to keep pushing youself until you begin to resent thelessons overall.

This advice applies to adult music piano lessons as much as it does to the lessons of children. The last thing a parent shoud do is push their child to the point where they resent having to practice and learn. Lessons on how to play jazz piano should be enjoyable for a child. They may be challenging, but they should instill in them a lifelong respect for music. If you find your child is battling a particular lesson, and growing more and more upset with the material, you should speak with them about putting it aside and trying something new. Even if they never get back to the original piece, at least their lessons continue and their love for music continues to grow.

Aside from variety, there are other ways to keep things interesting with your music lessons. Instead of trying a new song, try a new location. If you find yourself always practicing in the same room, move to another location. Obviously you cannot move the piano with you, but perhaps you could watch your video lessons away from the piano. If you are listening to recordings of yourself playing, you can do that at the local coffee shop and still have no problem jotting down notes. There are a variety of places you can use for different parts of your lesson and this will help keep things fresh.

If learning how to play jazz piano is in your future, it is never too early to plan for boredom. Embarking on music lessons is exciting, but when the excitement wears off, you need to find a way to keep your passion going. While you are still new to the practice, note the things you find exciting about the music. You may even want to create a journal and refer back to it when practicing is a struggle. Just like recapturing the magic that occurs early in a romantic relationship, you should make it your goal to keep the magic alive in your relationship with music.
